Hop aboard the Kirklees Light Railway's Easter Eggspress and travel by steam train to meet the Easter Bunny!

The clumsy Bunny has dropped his crunchy carrots in the playground at Shelley and needs your help to gather them up. Everyone who helps the Bunny will receive a chocolate treat and, if you manage to find one of the Bunny's golden eggs, you'll win a special prize.

Next up are the Egg & Spoon Races where kids, mums, dads, grannies, granddads and everyone in between can join in, with even more chocolatey treats for those taking part.

There will be platform rides, bouncy castles, giant lawn games, Artifaces face painting, a children's entertainer, the Clayton Flyer mini railway, our adventure playgrounds and the chance to do Easter crafts - all included in the cost of your ticket along with your return train ride!

The Easter Eggspress is running on Friday 30 March, Saturday 31 March, Sunday 1 April & Monday 2 April and advance booking is advised. Each day, the first train will depart Clayton West at 10am, with trains departing every 40 minutes thereafter until the final train of the day departs Clayton West at 4pm.

FAQs

What time will the station open and close?

The station will open at 9.30am, with the first train departing at 10am. The station will close after the last train has returned to Clayton West and the attractions, the café and shop will close between 5pm and 5.30pm. Please ensure you allow enough time at both stations to complete all activities.

Is there anywhere to eat?

There is the Buffer Stop Café at Clayton West Station, serving hot and cold food. The Tea Room at Shelley serves a drinks, snacks, cakes and ice cream. The barbeque at Shelley will be open, serving freshly cooked, locally-sourced produce. If you prefer to bring your own food, we have lots of outdoor picnic tables at both Clayton West and Shelley. We regret that only food purchased from the railway can be consumed in the café and tea room.

Can I bring a pushchair to the event?

Yes, however we recommend you only bring small foldable pushchairs. There is a pushchair carriage on the train if you wish to take them to Shelley, however the pushchair will need to be folded down to transport it. There is also a free buggy park located on the platform at Clayton West. Pushchairs cannot be taken into the cafe or shop at Clayton West due to access issues.

Where do I park my car?

The railway has a large free car park at Clayton West. In the event this car park becomes full, customers will be directed to an overflow car park. There are NO parking facilities at Shelley.

Do you accept card payments on site?

At Clayton West, card payments can be made at the Ticket Office, cafe and shop. At Shelley, we are unable to take card payments - please ensure you have brought cash with you if you wish to purchase anything at Shelley as we have no cash machines on site.

Do you have a cash machine on site?

No, please ensure you bring cash with you. Card payments are accepted at Clayton West station only.

Can I arrive earlier than my allocated time on my tickets?

Yes, you can arrive earlier than the allocated time on your tickets as this will enable you to complete some of the activities at Clayton West before you travel.

Can I travel to Shelley more than once during the day?

No, the event requires you to book a specific time slot to travel to Shelley which provides you with allocated seating on the train for the outgoing journey. Please ensure you complete all of the activities you wish to do whilst at Shelley before returning to Clayton West as you will be unable to travel back to Shelley.

Can I bring a dog to the event?

Please leave your pooches at home for this event. We anticipate the railway to be very busy and, with lots of little people around, we feel it is fairest to all that dogs do not visit during the Easter Eggspress event. Dogs are permitted to travel on non-special event days.

Will my tickets be posted out to me?

Yes, tickets will be sent through the post to you. Please allow up to two days before the event for your tickets to arrive. If you haven't received them two days before the event, please call the office on 01484 865727. Tickets that are purchased one week before the event, may be left for collection at the ticket office on the day of the event.

Is the event indoors or outdoors?

The event takes place both indoors and outdoors. The trains are enclosed and some of the activities are indoors, however we recommend you come dressed for the weather conditions expected.

Do I have allocated seats on the train?

On the outgoing journey between Clayton West and Shelley, you will have allocated seating on the train. On the return journey, you don't have allocated seating as you are able to spend as much time as you wish at Shelley, completing all of the activities on offer. There is no set time that you have to return from Shelley, trains will run every 40 minutes to Clayton West.
