The Friends of Kirklees Light Railway are hosting their 14th Annual Steam & Diesel Gala Weekend over the weekend of 14 & 15 September 2019.
The theme for this years event is "Estate Railways" and will feature:
•River Irt, currently celebrating her 125th year will be visiting from the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
•Katie will be visiting from the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
•Katie will be visiting from the Eaton Hall Railway
•Cagney No.44 from the Rhyl Miniature Railway
The visiting engines will operate alongside the home fleet of Badger, Hawk, Owl, Jay, Tram No.7 and the ever popular sisters, Sian and Katie. Interestingly, the KLR’s own Katie nearly ended up operating on an estate railway when she was purchased from the Dudley Zoo Railway by Captain Vivian Hewitt who intended to run her on a banana plantation in the Bahamas fuelled by coconut husks. Fortunately for the KLR, she only ever made it as far as Anglesey before she was purchased by the Fairbourne Railway following the death of the Captain.
The Gala weekend will feature an intensive timetable with departures every 30 minutes from Clayton West and Shelley and an hourly shuttle service operating between Clayton West and Skelmanthorpe. There will also be the opportunity to try your hand with our driver for a donation experience at Shelley Station. In addition to the main trains, the redeveloped miniature railway will be in operation and there will be a display of vintage vehicles, models and a photographic exhibition.
There will be a 20:00 departure on Saturday evening and the infamous "Shelley or Bust" final train of the gala departing at 17:00 on Sunday. This service will be hauled by as many available locomotives as possible! A limited timetable will also operate on Friday 13 September with trains departing at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00.
