What are the options for eating & drinking?

THE BUFFERSTOP CAFE

Serving a variety of fresh, seasonal produce, The Bufferstop Café is the railway’s largest eatery and is located within the station building at Clayton West.  

Cafe tables are set 1-2m apart to account for social distancing and are cleaned and disinfected after every use.  Tables for indoor and outdoor dining are offered on a first-come, first-served basis only. 

If dining inside The Bufferstop Cafe, every person over the age of 16 will be required to provide contact details to the cafe staff so that you are traceable in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak.  This can be done through the NHS Track & Trace app or by providing your details to our staff.  Please note that this is a legal obligation in accordance with UK Government guidance.  All details will be stored securely and accessible only by the General Manager of the railway, and will be securely destroyed after 21 days.

Unless sitting down to eat/drink in The Bufferstop Cafe, all visitors over the age of 11 will be required to wear a face mask/covering when in the station facilties inlcuding when ordering/collecting takeaway (unless medically exempt).

Well-behaved dogs are permitted in the café.  Scoop's ice cream for dogs can be purchased from The Bufferstop Cafe.

Please note that the cafe stops serving hot food at 3pm.

THE TURNTABLE @ SHELLEY STATION

 

Located at Shelley Station, The Turntable is our brand new ice cream/dessert parlour, which opened in April 2021.

The Turntable offers a range of scoop ice creams, sundaes, waffles, brownies, doughnuts, milkshakes and other sweet treats plus a range of hot and cold drinks.  Plant-based options are available.

The Turntable offers a takeaway service only but there is plenty of seating in our two large marquees (heated in cold weather) and outdoor picnic areas which offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. 

Please note The Turntable will close 10 minutes before the departure of the final train of the day from Shelley.

PLEASE NOTE: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Turntable will be operated on a one-out, one-in basis.  All visitors over the age of 11 will be required to wear a face mask/covering when purchasing items from The Turntable (unless medically exempt).

During most special event days, the barbecue tent at Shelley Station will also be open and offering a delicious selection of hot, freshly cooked food.

PICNIC AREAS 

 

Should you wish to eat al fresco, or bring your own hearty packed lunch with you, picnic areas are available outside both Clayton West and Shelley Stations.  With an abundance of outdoor seating and tables, you can watch the world go by whilst satisfying those rumbling tummies.

Picnic tables are set 1-2m apart and are disinfected on a regular basis.

Please use the litter bins provided and do not leave any rubbish behind.

AFTERNOON TEA

 

Our Afternoon Tea & Steam Experience comprises of a day ticket to the railway plus a delicious selection of fresh finger sandwiches, scones served with butter, fresh cream and fruity jam, sweet treats and cakes, served with your choice of freshly brewed tea or coffee.  You can choose to eat your tea in The Bufferstop Cafe or opt to take it away with you to eat outside or at home - please just let us know when making your booking!

Prices for 2021:

  • One adult - £17.95
  • Two adults - £35.95
  • Family of Four (2 adults + 2 children) - £60.95
  • Child (up to 12 years old) - £14.95

Advance booking is essential (we suggest at least one month's notice).  Please call the railway on 01484 865727 to check availability and reserve your slot or reserve online HERE (2021 dates will be released shortly). 

We regret that due to the popularity of our afternoon tea experiences, we may be unable to accommodate you on your preferred date of travel but we will endeavour to book you in for a convenient time.

Afternoon Teas are not available during Special Event periods nor on Bank Holidays. Please check with the railway for exclusions.

Train rides will be part of the scheduled service on general operating days.
