What are the options for eating & drinking?

THE BUFFER STOP CAFE

 

Serving a variety of fresh, seasonal, locally-sourced produce, the Buffer Stop Café is the railway’s largest eatery and is located within the station building at Clayton West.  

Cafe tables are set 1-2m apart to account for social distancing and are cleaned and disinfected after every use.  Tables for indoor and outdoor dining are offered on a first-come, first-served basis only. 

If dining inside The Buffer Stop Cafe, the lead member of each 'social bubble' will be required to provide contact details to the cafe staff so that you are traceable in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak.  Please note that this is in accordance with UK Government guidance.  All details will be stored securely and accessible only by the General Manager of the railway, and will be securely destroyed after 21 days.

Unless sitting down to eat/drink in The Buffer Stop Cafe, all visitors over the age of 11 will be required to wear a face mask/covering when in the station facilties inlcuding when ordering/collecting takeaway (unless medically exempt).

Well-behaved dogs are permitted in the café.

Please note that the cafe stops serving hot food at 3pm.

SHELLEY TEA ROOM

 

Located at the Shelley Station, Shelley Tea Room is a small, cosy café offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. 

Shelley Tea Room offers a selection of drinks, snacks, ice creams and light refreshments.

PLEASE NOTE: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shelley Tea Room will be offering a takeaway only service until further notice.  This service will be operated on a one-out, one-in basis.  All visitors over the age of 11 will be required to wear a face mask/covering when purchasing takeaway from Shelley Tea Room (unless medically exempt).

During most special event days, the barbecue outside Shelley Tea Room will be open and offering a delicious selection of hot, fresh food.

Please note Shelley Tea Room will close 10 minutes before the departure of the final train of the day from Shelley.

PICNIC AREAS 

 

Should you wish to eat al fresco, or bring your own hearty packed lunch with you, picnic areas are available outside both Clayton West and Shelley Stations.  With an abundance of outdoor seating and tables, you can watch the world go by whilst satisfying those rumbling tummies.

Picnic tables are set 1-2m apart and are disinfected on a regular basis.

Please use the litter bins provided and do not leave any rubbish behind.

AFTERNOON TEA

 

Our Afternoon Tea & Steam Experience comprises of a day ticket to the railway plus a delicious selection of fresh finger sandwiches, scones served with butter, fresh cream and fruity jam, sweet treats and cakes, served with your choice of freshly brewed tea or coffee.  You can choose to eat your tea in The Buffer Stop Cafe or opt to take it away with you to eat outside or at home - please just let us know when making your booking!

Prices for 2020:

  • One adult - £17.50
  • Two adults - £35
  • Family of Four (2 adults + 2 children) - £60
  • Child (add on, up to age 12) - £14

We regret that due to the popularity of our afternoon tea experiences, we may be unable to accommodate you on your preferred date of travel but we will endeavour to book you in for a convenient time.

Afternoon Teas are not available during Special Event periods nor on Bank Holidays. Please check with the railway for exclusions.

Train rides will be part of the scheduled service on general operating days.
