The KLR & COVID-19

The latest on our response to COVID-19

UPDATED 15 JUNE 2021

Given the delay in restrictions easing announced by the Prime Minister on 14 June 2021, the KLR will continue to operate until mid-July as it has been doing since reopening in July 2020.  Tickets are on sale now up to and including the weekend of 10-11 July 2021.  Tickets for dates after this time will be released shortly.

Until further notice we:

  • Request that ALL visitors PRE-BOOK in advance ONLINE.  This means you must book your tickets BEFORE you arrive at the KLR
  • Request that ALL visitors have a ticket for the KLR, whether you are travelling on a train or not.  Facilities-only tickets are available for those wanting to access the Clayton West playground and platform
  • Request that visitors book for no more than two households or six people maximum (whichever is more)
  • Request that visitors do not gather in groups of more than 30 people when OUTDOORS at the KLR.  When on the trains and inside facilities, visitor groups should continue to maintain social distancing in line with the two households/six people maximum rule
  • Continue to run our services at half capacity to allow for social distancing between visitor groups
  • Continue to request that visitors wear face masks when on the trains and inside station facilities
  • Continue to request that visitors sign in using the NHS Track & Trace app or by giving their contact info to our staff on arrival
  • Continue to request people remain socially distant from those not in their visitor group
  • Can offer indoor dining options in the cafe at Clayton West for groups of no more than two households/six people (whichever is more) per table.  Takeaway is also available
  • Continue to request that onsite payments are made by contactless methods wherever possible

We continue to be led by Government guidance with regards to social distancing, face mask wearing etc. so please be patient as we only find out what the rules are when everybody else does.

Please note that there are NO TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS into or out of Kirklees.  Both the Government and local council have confirmed this: https://kirkleestogether.co.uk/2021/05/25/statement-by-kirklees-outbreak-control-board-on-travel-restrictions/.

This means the Kirklees Light Railway is still very much open for business and EVERYONE is welcome to visit so long as visitors adhere to our COVID-secure measures at all times.

Kirklees is a huge, sprawling area.  The KLR is situated in a rural part right on the very boundary of the borough which borders Wakefield and Barnsley council areas.  The KLR's local area has low COVID infection rates (at the time of writing there is an average of 4.3 cases in each of the three wards the KLR passes through) and high vaccine uptake rates.

The health and wellbeing of our visitors, volunteers and staff is – and always will be – our number one priority and we continue to do everything we possibly can to ensure a COVID-secure yet enjoyable day out in the West Yorkshire countryside.
