Journey on our steam locomotives
Climb aboard Yorkshire's Great Little Steam Trains at the Kirklees Light Railway!
Travel behind one of our five steam locomotives in beautiful hand-painted carriages for three and-a-half miles from Clayton West Station to our Shelley Station terminus.
Take in the glorious views as you steam through the South Pennine Foothills, passing through Cuckoo's Nest, the ancient Blacker Woods, Skelmanthorpe and the Shelley Woodhouse Tunnel (the longest tunnel on any 15-inch narrow gauge line in Britain!).
The journey one way takes approximately 25 minutes and a return trip can be completed in 65 minutes if you're short on time. If not, take advantage of our standard Day Rover tickets which allow unlimited travel on the day you visit (not applicable to special events).

We have outdoor adventure playgrounds at both Clayton West Station and Shelley Station – the perfect place for our younger visitors to run around and let off some steam!
The playground at Clayton West opened in March 2018 and is the larger of the two playgrounds at the railway. It is securely fenced off, features a wooden train, swings, climbing frames and slides and is situated near to the picnic area and also close to the car park.
The playground at Shelley is also based around a train theme (what else?!) and has a sandpit for the children to enjoy on sunnier days! It is securely fenced off and overlooks the platform so you can watch the trains come and go as you play.
Please note: the playgrounds are for the sole use of paying customers only. The playgrounds are only open when the railway is open to the public (unless you are on a scheduled group/school visit).
PLEASE NOTE: The miniature railway is undergoing redevelopment in early 2019 and may not be available for use on all operating days in February/March 2019.
The Clayton Flyer outside Clayton West Station is our 7.25 inch miniature railway which whizzes around the duck pond.
Enjoy two laps of the loop for just £1 per person and see if you can spot any of our resident ducks or newts on the way around!
Gift & Model Shop
Our well-stocked gift and model shop is located inside the Clayton West Station building. Selling an abundance of trinkets, toys, clothing, books, model railways for the serious (and not-so-serious!) enthusiast and much, much more! We also offer an ordering service – if you can’t find what you want in the shop, chances are we’ll be able to order it for you at unbeatable prices.
The railway allows access to numerous walks in and around the surrounding countryside and villages.
Take advantage of our "ride all day" fares and access one of the many walks from one of our stations.
Single tickets are also available from our Ticket Office if you choose to either start or end your walk with a trip on the railway.
Walking routes around Clayton West, Skelmanthorpe and Shelley are accessible from the railway and can also be accessed from our intermediate stations at Cuckoo's Nest and Skelmanthorpe.

If you would like to either board or leave the train at one of the intermediate stations, please speak to the guard or driver beforehand or give a clear signal to the guard to stop the train.

Shepley Station - Shelley Station Link
A walking route between the mainline railway station at Shepley and our station at Shelley has been created, allowing passengers who are travelling by train to easily access our station at Shelley. The walking route was developed by the Penistone Line Partnership and is signposted by way-markers

Well-behaved pooches are very welcome at the railway on standard operating days and are permitted to travel free-of-charge. All we ask is that you let the Ticket Office know if you are travelling with your dog and they will be given their very own Rover Day Rover ticket!
Dogs are allowed inside the station buildings and cafe.
For the safety & comfort of all our canine & human guests, we respectfully request that dogs are left at home on special event days (unless specifically stated otherwise on the event page). Guide dogs & other dogs used by our visitors for special reasons (autism dogs etc.) are excluded from this request.
