Journey on our steam locomotives
Climb aboard Yorkshire's Great Little Steam Trains for a fantastic family day out!
Travel behind one of our six steam locomotives in beautiful hand-painted carriages for three and-a-half miles from Clayton West Station to Shelley Station.
Glorious views await as you steam through the South Pennine Foothills, passing through Cuckoo's Nest, the ancient Blacker Woods, Skelmanthorpe and the Shelley Woodhouse Tunnel (the longest tunnel on any 15-inch narrow gauge railway line in Britain!).
The journey one way takes approximately 25 minutes and a return trip can be completed in 65 minutes.
If you're not in a hurry, take advantage of our standard Day Rover tickets which allow unlimited travel on the day you visit (not applicable to special events).
Recommended by roughguides.com as one of the best places to visit in Yorkshire.
We have outdoor adventure playgrounds at both Clayton West Station and Shelley Station – perfect for young visitors to let off some steam!
The playground at Clayton West opened in 2018 and is the larger of the two playgrounds at the railway. It is securely fenced off, features a wooden train, swings, climbing frames and slides and is situated near to the picnic area and also close to the car park.
The playground at Shelley is also based around a train theme (what else?!) and has a sandpit for the children to enjoy on sunnier days! It is securely fenced off and overlooks the platform so you can watch the trains come and go as you play.
PLEASE NOTE: THE PLAYGROUND AT SHELLEY WILL BE CLOSED FOR REDEVELOPMENT FROM MONDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2019 FOR AT LEAST 4 WEEKS (WEATHER DEPENDENT). THERE WILL BE NO PLAY FACILITIES AT SHELLEY DURING THIS TIME.
Please note: the playgrounds are for the use of paying customers only and are only open when the railway is open to the public (unless you are on a scheduled group/school visit).
Redeveloped for 2019, the Clayton Flyer outside Clayton West Station is our 7.25-inch miniature railway which whizzes around the duck pond.
Enjoy a lap of the two loops for just £1 per person and see if you can spot any of our resident ducks or newts on the way around.
Our well-stocked gift shop is located inside Clayton West Station. Selling an abundance of souvenirs, trinkets, toys, clothing, books and starter model railway sets!
The railway allows access to numerous walks in and around the surrounding countryside and villages.
Take advantage of our "ride all day" fares and access one of the many walks from one of our stations/stops.
Single tickets are available from our Ticket Office if you would like to start or end your walk with a trip on the railway.
Walking routes around Clayton West, Skelmanthorpe and Shelley are accessible from the railway and can also be accessed from our intermediate stations at Cuckoo's Nest and Skelmanthorpe.

If you would like to board or leave the train at one of the intermediate stations, please speak to the guard or driver before your journey starts or give a clear signal to the guard to stop the train.
If you would like to walk a little further afield, such as to Denby Dale or Emley, this is possible using the vast footpath network surrounding the railway.

Shepley Station - Shelley Station Link
A walking route between the mainline railway station at Shepley and our station at Shelley has been created, allowing passengers who are travelling by train to easily access our station at Shelley. The walking route was developed by the Penistone Line Partnership and is signposted by way-markers

Well-behaved pooches are very welcome at the railway on standard operating days and are permitted to travel free-of-charge. All we ask is that you let the Ticket Office know if you are travelling with your dog and they will be given their very own Rover Day Rover ticket!
Dogs are allowed inside the station buildings and cafe.
For the safety & comfort of all our canine & human guests, we respectfully request that dogs are left at home on special event days (unless specifically stated otherwise on the event page).
Guide dogs & other dogs used by our visitors for special reasons (autism dogs etc.) are welcome at all times.
