The Kirklees Light Railway offers three different courses, making them an ideal present for a special occasion.

Whether you chose a one hour, two hour or one day course you can be sure of expert one to one tuition from one of our experienced drivers.

One Day Driver Experience Course
A special gift for a special occasion

As well as a chance to take the regulator of one of our larger engines. You will also learn how to handle one of our diesel engines and discover the mysteries of the role of the Guard.

14 Miles of Steam Driving – 4 Miles of Diesel Driving


These courses take place on selected Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the year between February - May and September - October.

One & Two Hour Driver Experience Courses
The chance to sample the thrill of Steam

Take to the footplate of one our smaller steam engines with one of our experienced engine drivers and learn how to fire and operate a steam locomotive first hand.

What does a one hour course involve?

Under the guidance of one of our experienced enginemen, the attendee will be introduced in the basics of how the locomotive works, its controls and how they are are operated. They will then take the regulator for a 4 mile round trip to Skelmanthorpe Station.

What does a two hour course involve?

Under the guidance of one of our experienced enginemen the attendee will be introduced in the basics of how the locomotive works, its controls and how they are operated. They will begin by taking the regulator on a 4 mile round trip to Skelmanthorpe Station. Then onto the finale of the experience, the chance to pull a set of our works train wagons or a short train of carriages on a 2 mile round trip to Cuckoo’s Nest Station. 

These courses take place on selected Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year between February - October.


Looking to take part in a Driver Experience Course, or have someone in mind, make sure you read the important information below:


  • Participants must be at least 18 years of age and be physically fit.
  • Due to the confined environment of our locomotives, please take into consideration the physical build of the person who will be partaking in the course. This is to ensure the safety of the attendee and the instructor. Please contact the office directly if you have any questions regarding this matter.
  • This activity may not be suitable for those with some disabilities, particularly where these affect mobility, concentration, dexterity and co-ordination. If you believe this may be a factor for the attendee please contact the office before purchasing the course to ensure the activity is suitable and to avoid any embarassment on the day.
